Maximo Santos, also known as Benito Barbaro Santos, was a prominent Uruguayan soldier and politician who played a significant role in the history of his country during the late 19th century. Born on August 26, 1847, Santos began his military career at a young age, fighting in the Uruguayan Civil War and the War of the Triple Alliance. He rose through the ranks, becoming a respected and capable commander. In 1872, Santos was appointed as the Governor of Salto, a position he held for five years. During this time, he worked to improve infrastructure, promote economic development, and maintain order in the region. In 1877, he was elected as a deputy to the National Assembly, where he advocated for military reforms and the modernization of the Uruguayan military. In 1880, Santos was appointed as the Minister of War and Navy, a position he held for three years. During his tenure, he oversaw the reorganization of the military and the implementation of new training programs. He also played a key role in the defeat of the Paraguayan invasion of Uruguay in 1880. In 1882, Santos was elected as the President of Uruguay, serving until 1886. During his presidency, he focused on economic development, infrastructure projects, and the modernization of the military. He also worked to improve diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and to promote peace and stability in the region.
