EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret of Parma (1522-1586), an illegitimate daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is depicted in this beautifully colored engraving from the 19th century publication "Historia Universal." Born to Johanna Maria van der Gheynst, Duchess of Florence and Duchess of Parma and Piacenza by marriage, Margaret's noble lineage and striking beauty are evident in this portrait. Margaret's life was marked by significant political roles. She served as the Governor of the Netherlands from 1559 to 1567 and again from 1578 to 1582. During her first tenure, she attempted to maintain peace and stability in the region amidst the growing unrest and religious tensions that would eventually lead to the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence. Her second term as governor came during a time of renewed conflict, and she was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Grave in 1578, which granted some concessions to the Dutch rebels. Despite her efforts, Margaret's reign was marked by numerous challenges, including the assassination of her son, Don Juan of Austria, in 1578. Her tenure as governor ended in 1582 when she was replaced by her nephew, Archduke Matthias. This engraving, produced in 1885, captures the essence of Margaret of Parma's regal presence and the complexity of her historical role. Her image, with its rich colors and intricate details, serves as a testament to her significance in European history during the 16th century.
