A Momentous Occasion in Scouting History: Laying the Foundation Stone of Baden Powell House, London (17 October 1959) This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in the history of scouting as Lady Olave, the wife of Lord Baden-Powell, lays the foundation stone for the new Baden Powell House in Queens Gate, South Kensington, London. The site was acquired in 1956, and renowned architect Ralph Tubbs was appointed to design the building. The scene is set on a crisp autumn day, with a platform and stage erected for the ceremonial occasion. Dignitaries and VIPs, including Lady Olave, stand on the platform, dressed in their finest attire, while a large marquee provides shelter for the guests. A speaker addresses the crowd through a microphone, his words carried by the wind. Surrounded by a sea of uniformed scouts and scouts leaders, Lady Olave lays the foundation stone, carefully placing it on the inscription-engraved brick wall. The stone, accompanied by a wreath of flowers, symbolizes the start of the construction of this new scouting centre, which would later become a hostel and conference venue. The building, which opened in 1961, went on to receive numerous awards and is still in use today. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 1950s and the special occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony for Baden Powell House.
