EDITORS COMMENTS
Ladies Day at the Club: A Scandalous Affair, Puck Magazine, September 14, 1910 The bustling dining room at the exclusive gentleman's club was a scene of chaos on this particular Ladies Day. The annual event, which allowed women to join their husbands or male companions for a meal, had become notorious for the audacious behavior of some of the fairer sex. As the clock struck noon, the ladies, dressed in their finest attire, descended upon the room, their purses at the ready. With a mischievous glint in their eyes, they helped themselves to the table settings, silverware, and even the prized crystal decanters, stuffing them into their bags with reckless abandon. The men, who had grown accustomed to the tradition, watched with amused resignation, some even joining in the fun. But this year, the club's House Committee had had enough. Determined to put a stop to the pilfering, they had decided to conduct a surprise inventory during Ladies Day. The insert to this Puck Magazine cartoon shows the horrified reactions of the club members as they discovered the extent of the looting. The women, caught in the act, feign innocence while the men express their disbelief and frustration. This audacious display of disregard for the club's rules and property caused quite a stir in society at the time, with some deeming it a sign of the growing emancipation of women. But for the club's committee, it was a clear message that change was needed. From then on, Ladies Day would be a more regulated affair, with strict guidelines to ensure the sanctity of the club's possessions.
