1869 Kimberley Liberal Wodehouse

EDITORS COMMENTS
John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley (1826-1902), also known as Lord Wodehouse from 1846 to 1866, was a prominent British Liberal politician who held office in every Liberal administration from 1852 to 1895. In this striking photograph taken in 1869, Earl Kimberley is depicted in formal attire, exuding an air of confidence and sophistication. Born into the aristocracy, Kimberley entered politics as a Member of Parliament for Ipswich in 1852. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving in various cabinet positions, including Postmaster General, President of the Board of Trade, and Secretary of State for the Colonies. His political career was marked by his pragmatism and ability to compromise, earning him the nickname "Gladstone's Chesire Cat" due to his knack for always landing on his feet. Despite his political successes, Kimberley faced numerous challenges throughout his career. He was a strong advocate for free trade and imperial expansion, but also supported the abolition of the Corn Laws, which caused controversy among some in the party. Additionally, his tenure as Colonial Secretary was marked by the Zulu War and the resulting controversy over the treatment of native populations. Despite these challenges, Kimberley remained a dedicated and effective politician, always striving to improve the situation, while accepting the realities of the political landscape. This photograph captures him at the height of his power and influence, a testament to his enduring legacy as one of the most influential Liberal statesmen of his time.
