1886 Aragon Artistica Castile Castille Ilustracion Joanna Personage Weber 15th

EDITORS COMMENTS
Joanna of Castile, also known as Joanna the Mad (1479-1555), is depicted in this stunning 19th-century engraving by M. Weber for the Spanish publication La Ilustracion Artistica. Born in 1479, Joanna was the eldest daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon and Catherine of Castile, the renowned Catholic Monarchs who united Spain under their rule. In 1504, at the age of 25, Joanna became Queen of Castile in her own right upon the death of her brother, King Hudon. Later, in 1516, she was also crowned Queen of Aragon following the death of her husband, Ferdinand II of Aragon. This portrait captures Joanna in the prime of her life, adorned in the rich robes and regal jewels befitting a queen of this era. Her expression is serene and regal, yet there is a hint of melancholy in her eyes, perhaps reflecting the burdens of ruling two powerful kingdoms during a time of political instability. Joanna's reign was marked by controversy and mental instability, which earned her the epithet "the Mad." Her behavior became increasingly erratic, and she was eventually confined to a convent for the remainder of her life. Despite her mental health struggles, Joanna remains an intriguing figure in European history, a woman who ruled with authority and left an indelible mark on the history of Spain. This beautiful engraving, published in 1886, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the modern age and allowing us to appreciate the grandeur and complexity of the European monarchies of the 15th and 16th centuries.
