Biblical Breaking Breaks Broken Cast Ceramics Clay Instructed Instruction Jeremiah Pots Potter Potters Prophet Symbolic Symbolism Teaching Vessels Word

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative 19th century illustration depicts the biblical prophet Jeremiah carrying out the symbolic act of shattering clay pots. According to the Old Testament book of Jeremiah, God instructed Jeremiah to go to the potter's house and watch as the potter shaped a clay vessel on his wheel. If the pot became misshapen or marred, the potter would simply crush it and start anew with a fresh piece of clay. God then used this illustration to teach Jeremiah a lesson about His power to shape and mold His people, and His ability to bring about new beginnings even from the ruins of failure. The prophet was instructed to go and buy a clay jar from the potter and take it along to a public place, where he was to smash it in the sight of the people. This dramatic act was a symbol of God's judgment against the people of Judah for their disobedience and idolatry. The broken shards of the potter's vessels served as a stark reminder of the consequences of turning away from God's word and instruction." This powerful image from the Reuben Luke Collection at Mary Evans Picture Library captures the intensity and gravity of Jeremiah's actions, as he casts down the potter's vessels in obedience to God's will. The use of rich, earthy tones and intricate detail in the illustration adds to the sense of depth and meaning, making it a captivating and thought-provoking representation of this iconic biblical story.
