Jenny Lind, born Johanna Maria Lind (Mrs. Goldschmidt), was a renowned Swedish singer who captivated audiences across Europe and North America during the 19th century. This evocative photograph captures Lind in the prime of her career, around 1887, as she prepared to enchant her devoted fans with her powerful and emotive voice. Born on February 20, 1820, in Värmland, Sweden, Lind's musical talent was discovered at a young age. She began her professional singing career in her early twenties, performing in various theaters and concert halls throughout Europe. Her unique vocal abilities and captivating stage presence quickly gained her a large following, and she was soon hailed as the "Swedish Nightingale." Lind's fame reached new heights in 1850 when she embarked on a highly successful concert tour of the United States, organized by the famous impresario P.T. Barnum. She performed to sold-out audiences in major cities such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, and her earnings from the tour were used to fund the construction of the Jenny Lind Chapel in her hometown of Stockholm.
