EDITORS COMMENTS
Jan Hus: A Martyr for Religious Reform in 15th Century Bohemia This haunting image depicts the final moments of Jan Hus, a Czech religious reformer and master at Charles University in Prague. Hus, born around 1372, was a vocal critic of the corruption and worldliness within the Catholic Church during the late Middle Ages. He advocated for a return to the simple, biblical teachings of the early Church and gained a large following in Bohemia and beyond. Despite his denials of heresy, Hus was summoned to the Council of Constance in 1415 to answer charges of heresy. Despite his insistence on his orthodoxy, he was found guilty and sentenced to be burnt at the stake on July 6, 1415. The execution took place in the Market Square in Constance, and this image, though likely a later representation, captures the somber and tragic scene. Hus's death marked a turning point in the history of the Czech Reformation. His followers, known as the Hussites, continued to spread his teachings and eventually led to the establishment of the Unity of the Brethren, the oldest Protestant denomination in Europe. Hus's legacy as a reformer and martyr for religious freedom continues to be celebrated in the Czech Republic and beyond.
