Jack Binns, wireless-telegraph operator

Jack Binns, the wireless-telegraph operator on the RMS Republic that sank after colliding with the SS Florida on 23rd January 1909, near Nantucket, Massachusetts. Republic was issued with the new Marconi wireless telegraph system and became the first ever ship to issue a CQD (Come Quickly, Danger) distress signal, when Jack Binns transmitted the message for fourteen hours straight amidst the wreck of the wireless office. The Republic sank on 24th January, after passengers had been painstakingly transferred to the Florida, and then the White Star liner RMS Baltic.

Danger Jack Marconi Operator Quickly Signalling System Telegraph Telegraphy Wireless Binns

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Jack Binns, a brave wireless-telegraph operator, is seen at his station aboard the ill-fated RMS Republic. The image was captured in 1909, shortly before the ship's tragic collision with the SS Florida near Nantucket, Massachusetts. The Republic was one of the first vessels to be equipped with the revolutionary Marconi wireless telegraph system, making it the first ship to transmit a CQD (Come Quickly, Danger) distress signal. As the water began to encroach upon the Republic's wireless office, Jack Binns worked tirelessly to send out the urgent message for fourteen hours straight. The CQD signal was repeated until the very last moment, alerting nearby ships to the imminent danger and facilitating the rescue of Republic's passengers. Despite Jack's heroic efforts, the Republic sank on the 24th of January, 1909. The passengers were successfully transferred to the Florida and later to the White Star liner RMS Baltic. Jack Binns' unwavering dedication to his duty during this harrowing ordeal is a testament to the vital role that wireless telegraphy played in maritime safety during the early 1900s. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity and the importance of effective communication in ensuring the safety of those at sea. It is an image that encapsulates the spirit of innovation, bravery, and determination that characterized the early days of wireless telegraphy.
