Issachar, the Twelfth Son of Jacob and Leah, is depicted in this stunning image from the Thomas Bankes Bible, Plate VI, created in the late 18th century. The Old Testament patriarch is shown here with his symbolic animal transport, a donkey carrying a load between its ears. According to the biblical account in Genesis 49:14-15, Issachar was blessed by his father Jacob, who foresaw that the tribe of Issachar would be "crouching between two heels," suggesting a position of service and submission.
