EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the Indian rhinoceros, also known as the greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis), in its natural habitat. The engraving is based on an illustration by J.C.F. Höckh, after an original drawing by J.A.E. Ridinger, and was produced by Nussbiegel for Dr. Johann Schreber's seminal work "Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (Mammals in Pictures after Nature), published in Erlangen, Germany, in 1775. Schreber was a renowned German naturalist and professor of natural history at Erlangen University from 1770. His comprehensive and meticulously detailed work on mammals was a significant contribution to the scientific community of the time, showcasing the natural history of various species through accurate and beautifully rendered illustrations. The Indian rhinoceros, a large herbivore, is native to the Indian subcontinent and is easily recognizable by its distinctive appearance, featuring a large, shield-like skin fold on its shoulders, and a single horn on its snout. The species is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), due to habitat loss and poaching for its horn, which is valued in traditional Asian medicine. This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 18th century but also raises awareness of the ongoing conservation efforts required to protect this magnificent and vulnerable species.
