EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph by Madame Yevonde, Hon. Sylvia Beatrice Coke, the elder daughter of Viscount Thomas William Coke, 4th Earl of Leicester, poses with an enchanting smile, her engagement to Captain Simon Harvey Combe announced only a short while prior. Dressed in an elegant, flowing gown, Sylvia's radiant beauty is accentuated by the soft lighting and intricate detail of the portrait. The year is 1932, and the 30s are in full swing, an era of elegance and refinement, particularly within the aristocratic circles of which Sylvia is a cherished member. The image captures a moment of joy and anticipation in Sylvia's life, as she stands poised on the brink of marriage. Her engagement to Captain Combe, a union filled with love and promise, would take place later that same year. The photograph is a testament to the grace and charm of the aristocracy during this period, a time when such social milestones were celebrated with great fanfare. Another intriguing aspect of Sylvia's life is her participation in the Lewis Carroll Memorial Matinee, an event organized for charity. In a separate photograph (bottom left), Sylvia can be seen having her White Rabbit ears adjusted by Lady Mount Temple, as she dons a costume inspired by the beloved character from Alice's Wonderland. This playful moment adds a touch of whimsy to Sylvia's image, further highlighting the enchanting allure of the 1930s. This portrait of Hon. Sylvia Beatrice Coke, captured by the skilled lens of Madame Yevonde, is a precious piece of history that transports us back to a time of elegance, charm, and the simple joys of life.
