EDITORS COMMENTS
Henry of Lorraine, Duke of Guise (1550-1588), also known as "le Balafre" or the Scarred, is depicted in this stunning handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, from the renowned historical costumes publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) by Georges Duplessis, published in Paris in 1867. Born into the powerful House of Guise, Henry distinguished himself as a skilled military commander and a formidable political figure during the late 16th century. He earned his nickname "le Balafre" after receiving a severe wound during the Battle of Dormans in 1575. The battle, fought between the French and the Holy Roman Empire, saw the French forces led by the Duke of Guise emerge victorious. The illustration captures the Duke in his regal attire, adorned with the insignia of his ducal rank and the Order of Saint Michael. The intricate details of his clothing, from the rich velvet fabric to the elaborate embroidery and lace, are testament to the opulence and grandeur of the French court during this period. The Duke's stern expression and piercing gaze convey his strong leadership and determination, making for a powerful and captivating portrait. This illustration is not only a valuable historical record of the fashion and style of the late 16th century, but also a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time. The handcoloring and lithography techniques used to bring the image to life add an additional layer of depth and detail, making it a true masterpiece of historical art.
