EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Guy Fawkes, the infamous conspirator of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Born in 1570 in York, England, Fawkes was a member of a clandestine group of provincial English Catholics who sought to overthrow the Protestant King James I and replace him with a Catholic monarch. The group, led by Robert Catesby, planned to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605, using a large cache of gunpowder hidden in a cellar beneath the building. Fawkes, who was appointed as the keeper of the gunpowder, was discovered in the cellar on the night before the planned explosion, leading to the unraveling of the plot. He was arrested, along with several other conspirators, and subjected to brutal torture before being sentenced to hang, draw, and quarter for high treason. This portrait, believed to have been created around the time of Fawkes' arrest or shortly thereafter, depicts him as a brooding, intense figure with piercing eyes and a stern expression. His dark, unkempt beard and disheveled hair add to his ominous appearance. The portrait serves as a chilling reminder of the failed Gunpowder Plot and the dangers of political unrest and religious strife in early modern England. Despite his notoriety as a criminal and a traitor, Guy Fawkes has become an iconic figure in popular culture, particularly in the context of protests against government oppression and the mask known as the Guy Fawkes mask, which has been adopted by various activist groups as a symbol of resistance and anonymity.
