EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures three brave members of the Glorious L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, during the early days of World War I. The scene is set near Compiegne, France, on August 24, 1914, where these gallant soldiers, Gunner Derbyshire, Driver Osborne, and their commanding officer, Captain Bradbury, faced a formidable enemy. Amidst surprise fire from a powerful German force, consisting of ten field guns and two Maxims, L Battery's three guns held their ground. Tragically, two of the British guns were silenced, but under Captain Bradbury's command, Gunner Derbyshire and Driver Osborne persisted in maintaining fire. Their unwavering determination paid off, as they managed to reduce the German force to only a single gun remaining. Alas, Captain Bradbury paid the ultimate sacrifice for their bravery, earning a posthumous Victoria Cross. Gunner Derbyshire and Driver Osborne, who stood side by side in the face of adversity, were each awarded the Medaille Militaire for their heroism. The Battery suffered heavy losses, with six officers and 63 men or NCOs killed or wounded. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the unwavering courage and selflessness displayed by these soldiers during the first days of the Great War. The portrait of Captain Bradbury, center stage, adds a sense of regality and determination to the scene, while Gunner Derbyshire and Driver Osborne, on either side, embody the grit and resilience of the British soldiers who fought valiantly in the face of overwhelming odds.
