This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, offers a close-up view of the scrapes and grooves etched into an exposed chalk outcrop at Kilcoan, Islandmagee. The striations, or scratches, on the chalk are the result of the movement of glaciers during the last Ice Age. Around 20,000 years ago, massive ice sheets advanced southwards from Scotland, carving and shaping the land as they retreated. The chalk outcrops at Kilcoan were exposed to the abrasive action of the glaciers, leaving behind these distinctive markings. The chalk, a type of limestone, is composed primarily of the mineral calcite. Its softness makes it particularly susceptible to the effects of glacial movement.
