EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts King George IV of England, who reigned from 1820 to 1830. Born on August 12, 1762, George was the second son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and love of hunting, racing, and the arts. Before his accession to the throne, George served in the military and was awarded several medals for his bravery, including the Order of the Bath and the Order of the Garter. These decorations are prominently displayed in the portrait, signifying his military accomplishments and high rank. King George IV ascended to the throne following the death of his father in 1820. His reign was marked by a renewed interest in British culture and the arts, as well as a focus on diplomacy and foreign affairs. He was also known for his efforts to improve the condition of the British navy and military. This beautiful print, created in 1824 by the renowned English engraver William H. Brooke after a painting by the acclaimed artist William Collins, captures the regal presence and dignified demeanor of King George IV. The intricate details of the king's attire, the rich textures of the fabric, and the lifelike rendering of his features all contribute to the overall impact of the portrait. King George IV passed away on June 26, 1830, and was succeeded by his nephew, William IV. This print serves as a testament to the life and reign of a monarch who left a lasting impact on British history.
