Born on July 12, 1841, in Knowsley Hall, Lancashire, England, Stanley was the eldest son of Edward Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby, and Lady Emily Bootle-Wilbraham. He succeeded his father as the Earl of Derby upon his death in 1851, at the young age of ten. Stanley's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Lancashire in 1865. He held various positions in the Conservative Party, including serving as Home Secretary from 1885 to 1886 and as Prime Minister from 1895 to 1902. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he oversaw several significant events, including the Boer War and the passing of the Education Act of 1902. Stanley was also a passionate sportsman and a keen supporter of horse racing. He owned several racehorses and was the namesake of the famous Epsom Derby, which he won three times as the owner: in 1853, 1856, and 1862. The race was later renamed the "Epsom Derby and Oaks" in his honor.
