24th Count Dauvergne Hundred Martial Orleans Salisbury Siege

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting, titled "Vigiles de Charles VII" or "The Watchmen of Charles VII," was created by the renowned French artist Martial d'Auvergne around 1484. The scene depicted in this image is the significant moment from the Hundred Years War when the Count of Salisbury, a prominent English commander, met his demise during the siege of Orleans on October 24, 1428. The Hundred Years War, a series of conflicts between England and France, had been raging for over a century, and the siege of Orleans marked a turning point in the war. The city was under siege by the English forces, led by the Duke of Bedford, who sought to conquer it and cut off the French king, Charles VII, from his northern territories. The Count of Salisbury, a valiant and experienced soldier, was in command of the English forces during the siege. However, his luck ran out on this fateful day when he was struck down by French forces, led by Jean Bureau, as he stood atop the city walls. The death of the Count of Salisbury was a significant blow to the English forces, and it marked the beginning of their eventual defeat in the siege of Orleans. This miniature painting, which is now housed in the National Library of France in Paris, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Gothic period. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the scene to life, transporting us back to a time of war and conflict. The painting also serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that the Hundred Years War played in shaping the political landscape of Europe.
