EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the steam schooner Fram, under the command of the renowned Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen, as it sets sail from Bergen harbor on July 2, 1893. Fram, a groundbreaking vessel of its time, was the first steam-powered ship specifically designed for polar exploration. Nansen, an intrepid adventurer and pioneering polar scientist, had already made history with his successful attempt to cross Greenland on foot in 1888. With Fram, Nansen embarked on a new expedition to the Arctic Ocean, aiming to reach the northernmost point ever recorded by a ship. The Fram would later become a key vessel in the heroic age of polar exploration, serving under the command of Norwegian explorers Otto Sverdrup, Oscar Wisting, and Roald Amundsen between 1893 and 1912. Fram's innovative design, including its ability to be compressed by ice, proved invaluable during these expeditions, enabling them to explore previously unreachable regions. This photograph, taken as Fram departed from Bergen, marks the beginning of a new chapter in polar exploration. The ship's powerful steam engine and sturdy construction would pave the way for groundbreaking discoveries in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. This image, with its dramatic composition and the promise of adventure on the horizon, remains a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration and the human desire to understand the world around us.
