First flight, 120 feet in 12 seconds, 10: 35 a. m. ; Kitty Hawk

First flight, 120 feet in 12 seconds, 10:35 a.m.; Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Photograph shows the first powered, controlled, sustained flight. Orville Wright at the controls of the machine, lying prone on the lower wing with hips in the cradle which operated the wing-warping mechanism. Wilbur Wright running alongside to balance the machine, has just released his hold on the forward upright of the right wing. The starting rail, the wing-rest, a coil box, and other items needed for flight preparation are visible behind the machine. (Orville Wright preset the camera and had John T. Daniels squeeze the rubber bulb, tripping the shutter.). Date 1903 Dec. 17

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the first powered, controlled, and sustained flight by the Wright Brothers, Orville at the controls and Wilbur running alongside, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Orville, lying prone on the lower wing, operates the wing-warping mechanism from a cradle, while Wilbur releases his hold on the forward upright of the right wing to help balance the machine. The starting rail, wing-rest, coil box, and other necessary items for flight preparation are visible behind the machine. Orville had set up the camera, with John T. Daniels squeezing the rubber bulb to capture the moment, marking the end of an era and the beginning of aviation history. The Wright Brothers' achievement, which took place at 10:35 a.m., marked a significant milestone in human history, demonstrating the potential for powered flight and paving the way for the development of modern aviation.
