Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930), was a prominent figure in British politics and law during the early 20th century. Born on February 27, 1872, in Dublin, Ireland, Smith rose to prominence as a barrister and judge before entering politics. In this striking photograph, Smith is depicted in full judicial regalia, a testament to his distinguished career as a judge. He held this position until 1924, when he resigned following a controversy over his involvement in the sale of honors. Despite this setback, Smith remained a respected figure in British politics and continued to serve in various capacities until his death on February 27, 1930.
