EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 10th century illuminated manuscript, known as the Escorial Beatus, showcases the intricate and symbolic art of Preromanesque Spain. Specifically, this image is taken from Folio 120r, which depicts the eschatological harvest and vintage as described in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 14:14-20). In the center, the Son of Man is depicted on a white horse, flanked by three angels holding sickles. They oversee the reaping of the earth, symbolizing the end of the world and the separation of the righteous from the wicked. The grapes are crushed underfoot, representing the winepress of the wrath of God. The vivid colors and meticulous details of this miniature painting are a testament to the artistic and spiritual richness of the period. This codex, with its commentary on the Apocalypse of St. John, was created in the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja, Spain, between 776 and 786 AD. It is now housed in the Royal Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Madrid, Spain.
