EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Duchess of Westminster, Constance Edwina Shelagh Cornwallis West (later Mrs James Fitzpatrick Lewes), in the midst of her humanitarian efforts during World War I. The Duchess, who was the first wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster, is depicted here in her role as a Red Cross nurse, overseeing her own hospital at Le Touquet in France, which came to be known as No. 1 Red Cross, Duchess of Westminster's Hospital. Established in 1915, the hospital was renowned for its pioneering methods of healing wounded soldiers. The facility boasted an electro-therapeutic department and an X-ray department, both of which were groundbreaking at the time. The Duchess is seen here in the company of some of her dedicated staff members, including Captain Stone, the hospital's X-ray expert, and his orderlies, as well as Miss Molesworth and Miss Richmond, a V.A.D. nurse. The Duchess's hospital was staffed by expert masseuses, who provided essential relief to the soldiers recovering from their injuries. The photograph, taken in 1918, offers a poignant reminder of the selfless contributions made by the aristocracy during the Great War, as the Duchess and her team worked tirelessly to provide comfort and care to those in need. This image is a testament to the resilience and compassion of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
