Circa 1890s: A Drunken Gentleman's Fruitless Attempt at Disguise - A disheveled Londoner, in multiple stages of disarray, beseeches a Policeman for a clove in an attempt to disguise the evidence of his heavy drinking. The gentleman, with an overcoat draped over one arm and a top hat in hand, fixes the policeman with a desperate plea, his monocle askew and his face flushed from the effects of alcohol. The olfactory sense of the policeman, however, is unlikely to be fooled by the clove, as the pungent smell of booze wafts through the London street. The unfortunate gent, with his smart appearance now reduced to a state of disarray, is a poignant reminder of the grip that alcoholism had on society during this era. This historical photograph, taken in the late 1800s, offers a glimpse into the past and the daily struggles faced by those battling the effects of alcohol.
