EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, two of the six Mitford sisters, Diana Mitford (later Mrs Bryan Guiness) and Nancy Mitford (later Mrs Peter Rodd), are seen in an intimate moment, their friendship and sisterly bond on full display. Taken in 1932, the sisters' youthful beauty and elegance are evident, with Diana in a chic white dress and Nancy in a stylish black ensemble. The Mitford sisters, known for their wit, charm, and controversial political affiliations, were a fascination of the British press and public in the 1930s. Diana, the eldest sister, married Bryan Guiness, an heir to the Guiness brewing fortune, in 1932. Nancy, the novelist and most famous of the sisters, would later marry Peter Rodd in 1945. However, their seemingly idyllic sisterhood was overshadowed by their political beliefs. Diana became a passionate supporter of Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists, causing a rift within the family. Nancy, while not a fascist herself, wrote admiringly of Adolf Hitler and his regime in her novel "The Pursuit of Love." Despite their political differences, the sisters remained close throughout their lives, with Diana serving as a bridesmaid at Nancy's wedding in 1945. This photograph captures a moment of sisterly affection and unity before the sisters' lives took dramatic and controversial turns. The Mitford sisters continue to fascinate historians and biographers, with their lives and political beliefs serving as a window into the social and political climate of pre-war Britain. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into their past, showcasing their youthful beauty and the complexities of their sisterly bond.
