EDITORS COMMENTS
"This historic photograph captures the moment of the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, held on May 26, 1896, in the Moscow Kremlin's Uspensky Cathedral. After receiving his crown, sceptre, and orb of empire, Tsar Nicholas II summoned his Empress to the throne. She approached and knelt on a cushion before him. The Tsar then touched her head with his crown and resumed it himself. A smaller crown was placed upon her head, adjusted by four Ladies-in-Waiting. The Empress was then invested with the Collar of St. Andrew and the imperial robe, and the Tsar embraced her and raised her to her throne upon the dais. The coronation ceremony marked the formal beginning of Tsar Nicholas II's reign and solidified the bond between the Tsar and his Empress, who would rule Russia together until their tragic deaths in 1918." This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and tradition of the Russian imperial court during the late 19th century. The solemn and reverent atmosphere of the ceremony is palpable in the image, with the Tsar and Empress dressed in their regal attire and surrounded by their courtiers. The intricate details of the crowns, robes, and other regalia add to the sense of history and tradition, making this a fascinating and important document of Russian history.
