Todd

EDITORS COMMENTS
Col. John G. Todd: A Distinguished Officer of the 35th New York Infantry during the American Civil War This striking portrait captures Col. John G. Todd, a prominent figure in the 35th New York Infantry during the American Civil War. The image, taken between 1860 and 1870, showcases Todd's stern yet resolute expression, reflecting the gravity of the times and the weight of responsibility that rested on his shoulders. Born on March 23, 1825, in New York City, Todd was a successful businessman and politician before the war. However, when the call to arms came, he answered, and on May 14, 1861, he was commissioned as a colonel of the 35th New York Infantry. Todd led his men with courage and determination throughout the conflict. He saw action in some of the most significant battles, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg. Todd's leadership and tactical acumen were instrumental in the Union's victories, earning him the respect and admiration of his troops and his superiors. Despite his military successes, Todd's tenure as a colonel was not without its challenges. In 1863, he was relieved of command due to political reasons, but he was soon reinstated after a court of inquiry cleared him of any wrongdoing. After the war, Todd returned to civilian life, resuming his business and political pursuits. He passed away on March 23, 1882, leaving behind a legacy as a distinguished officer and a dedicated public servant. This evocative portrait of Col. John G. Todd offers a glimpse into the life of a man who answered the call of duty during a time of national crisis and emerged as a hero.
