EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning marble bust depicts Claudius, the Roman Emperor who ruled from 41 to 54 AD, during the Julio-Claudian Dynasty. Born in Lugdunum in Gaul around 10 BC, Claudius was initially considered unfit to rule due to his physical impairments and perceived lack of intelligence. However, he proved his detractors wrong by embarking on a series of successful military campaigns, most notably the conquest of Britain in 43 AD. Claudius' reign was marked by significant expansion of the Roman Empire, as well as important social and legal reforms. He granted citizenship to thousands of non-Romans, expanded the Roman fleet, and initiated the construction of the first permanent bridge across the Danube River. This exquisite bust, now housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, provides a glimpse into the face of a complex and accomplished leader. The intricate details of Claudius' features, from the furrowed brow to the receding hairline, convey a sense of wisdom and determination. The bust is a testament to the artistic skill of the Roman sculptors of the time and serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural achievements of ancient Rome. The bust dates back to the 1st century AD, making it an invaluable artifact of the European antiquity. Its preservation and display at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek allows modern audiences to connect with the past and appreciate the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire.
