1817 Canning Charlotte Countess Ctss Mere Stuart Viscountess

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image, we find Charlotte Canning, later Countess Canning, in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born Charlotte Stuart on February 2, 1817, she was the daughter of the 12th Earl of Moray and Lady Charlotte Campbell. In 1832, she married Charles John Canning, who would later become Earl Canning and then, in 1862, the 1st Earl Canning of Malta. At the time this photograph was taken, however, both Charlotte and her husband held the title of Viscount and Viscountess Canning. The photograph captures the elegance and refinement of the young viscountess, her delicate features framed by a cascade of chestnut curls. Her dress, adorned with intricate lace and a high collar, is a testament to the opulence and sophistication of the era. Her expressive eyes, filled with intelligence and warmth, reveal a vibrant and engaging personality. The setting of the photograph is equally captivating, with a lush, green landscape stretching out behind Charlotte. The natural beauty of the surroundings serves as a striking contrast to the formal elegance of her attire, adding a sense of tranquility and serenity to the image. Charlotte Canning's life was marked by tragedy and heartache, as well as love and devotion. She was a devoted wife and mother, bearing her husband ten children, five of whom survived to adulthood. Sadly, her husband passed away in 1862, leaving her a widow at the young age of 45. She continued to serve as a patron of the arts and a philanthropist, using her influence and resources to support various charitable causes. This photograph, taken in the late 1800s, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman, whose beauty, grace, and strength continue to captivate and inspire us today.
