EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking colored engraving depicts Charles VI of Habsburg, also known as Charles III of Spain, making his proclamation as the new King of Spain in 1706. Born in 1685 as the eldest son of Emperor Leopold I, Charles succeeded his grandfather as Holy Roman Emperor in 1711, and also ruled as King of Bohemia, Hungary, and Croatia. However, his most significant claim was to the Spanish throne, which he inherited through his grandmother, Margarita of Austria, who was the sister of King Charles II of Spain. The War of Spanish Succession broke out in 1701 when the last Spanish Habsburg, Charles II, died without a direct heir. The European powers, including France and the Grand Alliance led by the Habsburg monarchs, vied for control of the Spanish throne. In this engraving, we see Charles VI being proclaimed as the new king in a grand and ornate room, surrounded by his supporters and the symbols of the Spanish monarchy. The scene exudes an air of solemnity and importance, reflecting the significance of this moment in European history. The Habsburg dynasty, one of the most powerful and influential in Europe, had now expanded its territories to include Spain, further solidifying its position as a major European power. The engraving also highlights the protocol and ceremony surrounding such an important proclamation, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and formality of the modern age. This image is a testament to the complex web of alliances, power struggles, and dynastic claims that shaped European history in the 18th century.
