EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as a group of Blackfoot Indians, also known as Niitsitapi or Blackfeet, make their way across a river in 1882. The Blackfoot people are a Native American tribe originally from the Great Plains of North America, with a rich cultural history centered around hunting, horseback riding, and warfare. The image, taken during a time of significant change for the Blackfoot Nation, shows the tribe members, many on horseback, making their way to a new location. The reason for their journey is not clear, but it may have been due to the encroachment of European settlers or the need to find new resources for their community. The photograph was taken during the tenure of Marquis Lorne, the Governor General of Canada, who was known for his interest in Native American culture and his efforts to promote peaceful relations between European settlers and Indigenous peoples. Lorne's presence in the region may have provided some measure of protection for the Blackfoot people as they traveled through Canadian territory. Despite the challenges they faced, the Blackfoot people remained resilient and adaptable, continuing to practice their traditional ways while also adopting new technologies and ways of living. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their strength and determination in the face of adversity, as well as the complex and evolving relationship between Indigenous peoples and European settlers in Canada during the late 19th century.
