EDITORS COMMENTS
This drawing by G.H. Davis transports us back in time to the heart of the British war effort during World War II. The Cabinet War Rooms, depicted in this meticulous cross-section, served as the underground headquarters for the British Cabinet, located 70 ft below Whitehall in London. Constructed between Downing Street and Storey's Gate, these subterranean rooms were a veritable fortress, shielded by a protective ceiling of 16 ft of reinforced concrete. The Cabinet War Rooms were not just a mere shelter; they were a fully functional command center, complete with its own defence organisation, gas-attack proof facilities, air-conditioning, and an intricate communications system. The elaborate network of rooms was designed to ensure the continuity of government in the event of aerial bombardments, which ravaged much of London during the war. The intricate details in this drawing, reminiscent of a cutaway diagram, reveal the various departments and offices housed within the war rooms. From the Cabinet Room itself, where critical decisions were made, to the Map Room, where military operations were monitored, every inch of this subterranean labyrinth played a crucial role in the British war effort. This historical drawing offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to a pivotal moment in world history. The Cabinet War Rooms stand as a testament to the resilience and determination of the British people during the darkest days of the war.
