Bonzo makes his bed... by George Studdy

Bonzo makes his bed, but does not lie in it -- he tries to get comfortable on a red cushion, without success, until he is turfed out by a small black and white kitten. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 1923

Bonzo Comfortable Cushion Discomfort Ernest Eyes Kitten Mongrel Saucer Studdy Uncomfortable 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Bonzo's Unsuccessful Nap: A Playful Scene by George Studdy This delightful photograph print captures the moment of comic discomfort experienced by Bonzo, the beloved small dog created by British artist George Ernest Studdy. In the image, Bonzo attempts to make himself comfortable on a bright red cushion, but his efforts are disrupted by an inquisitive and mischievous small black and white kitten. With a look of frustration on his saucer-like eyes, Bonzo seems to be struggling to find a peaceful spot to rest. Bonzo, a mongrel with an indiscriminate breeding and irresistible charm, first appeared in The Sketch magazine in 1922. The Bonzo craze that followed was a global phenomenon, resulting in an extensive range of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and other collectibles. This charming photograph, taken in February 1923 during the height of the 1920s Bonzo mania, showcases the playful and endearing nature of these beloved pets. George Ernest Studdy, the talented artist behind Bonzo, skillfully captured the humor and warmth of the human-animal bond in his work. The image of Bonzo and the kitten, with their contrasting sizes and expressions, highlights the unexpected and often amusing dynamics that can arise between pets. This photograph is a testament to Studdy's ability to capture the essence of pet life and the joy they bring to our lives, even in the most unexpected moments."
