1868 Bibliotheque Imperiale Libraries Nationale

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 1868 photograph captures a breathtaking view of the Bibliotheque Imperiale, now known as the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, in Paris. Located in the heart of the city, this historic library has been a symbol of knowledge and culture for over two centuries. The Bibliotheque Imperiale was established in 1635 by Cardinal Richelieu, making it one of the oldest libraries in France. However, it was not until the late 18th century that the library underwent significant expansion under the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte, who sought to create a grand imperial library to house his extensive collection of books. The library was renamed Bibliotheque Imperiale to reflect its new status as an imperial institution. In this photograph, we see the library's impressive facade, adorned with intricate carvings and statues. The large, arched windows allow natural light to flood the interior, illuminating the vast collection of books housed within. The library's iconic dome, which was added during Napoleon's reign, can be seen towering above the rooftops of Paris in the background. The Bibliotheque Imperiale played a crucial role in the development of the French library system and the preservation of France's cultural heritage. Today, it is known as the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and continues to be a beloved institution, attracting visitors from around the world who come to marvel at its historic collections and architectural beauty.
