EDITORS COMMENTS
Beatus of Liebana, also known as Beato de Liébana, was a renowned Spanish monk and illuminator who lived in the 8th century in the Kingdom of Asturias, in the north of present-day Spain. He is best known for his illuminated manuscript, The Commentary on the Apocalypse, which is housed in the National Library of Spain in Madrid. This particular image from the manuscript depicts the story of the Deluge, or the Great Flood, as told in the Book of Genesis. According to the biblical account, God sent a flood to cleanse the earth of its wicked inhabitants, sparing only Noah, his family, and the animals aboard the ark. Beatus' illustration vividly portrays the scene, with Noah and his family inside the ark, surrounded by a chaotic sea filled with drowning animals and people. The ark itself is a testament to Beatus' exceptional artistic skill, with intricate details and vibrant colors that bring the story to life. The Commentary on the Apocalypse was an essential text in medieval Catholicism and Christianism, used for both liturgical and educational purposes. Beatus' work reflects the rich artistic and religious traditions of the time, and his influence can be seen in later illuminated manuscripts and works of art. This image from The Commentary on the Apocalypse is a powerful reminder of the biblical story of salvation and the enduring power of religious art to convey complex stories and ideas through visual means. Beatus of Liebana's legacy continues to inspire scholars, artists, and believers alike, and his work remains an invaluable contribution to the history of art and religion in Spain and beyond.
