The image, taken in Culver City, California, reveals the unusual design of this aircraft, which was developed by the Hughes Aircraft Company for the United States Air Force. The XH-17 Flying Crane boasted an impressive size, with a length of 85 feet and a main rotor diameter of 118 feet. Its unconventional appearance was due in part to its unique undercarriage, which consisted of four pontoons instead of the typical skids or wheels used in helicopters. This design allowed the helicopter to take off and land on water, making it an ideal candidate for various search and rescue, transport, and logistical missions. The XH-17 Flying Crane was powered by four Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines, each producing 1,425 horsepower. It could carry a maximum payload of 10,000 pounds and had a top speed of 80 miles per hour. The helicopter held numerous world records for its size and capabilities, including the heaviest payload lifted by a helicopter and the longest distance flown with a payload. Despite its record-breaking achievements, the XH-17 Flying Crane was ultimately not put into production due to its high cost and the emergence of other helicopter designs that were more practical and cost-effective. Nevertheless, this remarkable aircraft remains an iconic symbol of aviation innovation and the limitless potential of human ingenuity.
