EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the unique and innovative Blohm & Voss BV-141 V3, a groundbreaking experimental aircraft designed and built by the German aerospace company Blohm & Voss during the 1940s. The BV-141 V3, registration number W.Nr. 230101, was flown extensively by the renowned test-pilot, Captain Eric Melrose Winkle Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, RN. Born on January 21, 1919, Winkle Brown was a former Royal Navy officer who made a significant contribution to aviation history by testing a diverse range of unusual and experimental aircraft, including the BV-141 V3. The BV-141 V3 was a versatile, twin-engine, multi-role aircraft, designed to serve as a transport, reconnaissance, and training platform for the Luftwaffe. Its distinctive design featured a unique combination of a high-wing monoplane configuration and a large, spacious fuselage, which could accommodate up to ten passengers or a variety of cargo. The aircraft was also equipped with retractable landing gear and a large tailfin, which provided exceptional stability and maneuverability. Despite its impressive capabilities, the BV-141 V3 never entered production due to the evolving circumstances of World War II and the shifting priorities of the German military. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of the Blohm & Voss team and the indomitable spirit of Captain Winkle Brown, who fearlessly pushed the boundaries of aviation technology during the 1940s.
