EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Air Marshal Lord Hugh Dowding (left) shares a moment of camaraderie with Group Captain Douglas Bader during the First Peacetime Battle-Of-Britain Anniversary Flypast over London in 1945. The historic event marked the fifth anniversary of the pivotal moment in World War II when the Royal Air Force (RAF) successfully defended the United Kingdom against the large-scale attacks by the German Air Force, popularly known as the Battle of Britain. Air Marshal Lord Hugh Dowding, who had been the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, is seen here in his full uniform, adorned with numerous decorations and insignia. He is flanked by Group Captain Douglas Bader, a renowned fighter pilot and a Battle of Britain ace, who had lost both legs in a flying accident before the war but continued to fly with the aid of prosthetic limbs. The flypast was held at North Weald Airfield in Essex, England, and featured 14 Spitfires, each piloted by Battle of Britain aces, led by Bader himself. The aircraft formed a distinctive formation as they soared through the London skies, leaving a trail of vapor in the crisp autumn air. The sight of these iconic planes, along with the presence of the veterans who had played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain, served as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the RAF personnel during the war. This photograph, taken in 1945, offers a glimpse into the rich history of the RAF and the Battle of Britain, an event that continues to be celebrated as a turning point in the history of World War II. The image is an invaluable archival record of this significant moment in time, capturing the spirit of camaraderie and determination that defined the RAF during the war and beyond.
