EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894), a remarkable Englishman of the 19th century. Layard was an accomplished traveller, archaeologist, cuneiformist, art historian, draughtsman, collector, author, politician, and diplomat, best known for his groundbreaking excavations of Nimrud and Niniveh in Mesopotamia. Born in England, Layard's insatiable curiosity and passion for history led him to embark on numerous journeys across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. His most significant discoveries, however, were made in the ruins of ancient Assyria, which at the time were largely unknown to the Western world. In 1845, Layard's excavations at Nimrud unearthed the magnificent Assyrian palace of Ashurbanipal, revealing a wealth of ancient treasures and inscriptions in cuneiform script. This discovery not only provided invaluable insights into Assyrian history but also revolutionized the study of ancient civilizations. Layard's subsequent excavations at Niniveh further expanded the world's knowledge of the Assyrian empire. His meticulous documentation of the findings, along with his own sketches and those of his collaborators, are still considered essential resources for scholars today. This engraving, produced by Capuz for the Spanish and American Illustration (La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana) in 1870, captures Layard in the prime of his career. Dressed in formal attire and adorned with the Order of the Star of India, he exudes the air of a distinguished gentleman and a man of great achievement. The rich colors of the illustration add to the sense of grandeur and importance, reflecting the significance of Layard's contributions to the world of archaeology and history.
