Alice Champion Marble Player Shorts Tennis Wimbledon

EDITORS COMMENTS
Alice Marble, the trailblazing American tennis champion, is captured in this historic photograph as she triumphantly holds aloft the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles trophy in 1939. Marble, born in 1913, made history that year by becoming the first woman to win both the US Open and Wimbledon singles titles in the same year. Her impressive performance at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club did not end there, as she also clinched the ladies' doubles and mixed doubles titles, making her a quadruple champion. Marble's impact on the sport extended beyond her impressive playing abilities. She was a pioneer in the fashion realm, as she was the first woman to wear shorts on the tennis court, debuting the look in 1932 and later popularizing it again in 1950. Her bold decision challenged the conservative norms of the time and paved the way for future players to express themselves through their on-court attire. Moreover, Marble was a vocal advocate for equality and acceptance in tennis. In the 1950s, she spoke out in support of Althea Gibson, the first black woman to compete at Wimbledon, and encouraged the public to embrace her talent and presence in the game. Marble's progressive views on race and sexuality were groundbreaking for her time and continue to inspire tennis players and advocates for equality today. In this image, Marble is seen triumphantly posing with Fru Sperling, whom she defeated in the semi-finals, before going on to face and defeat Briton Kay Stammers in the final. The photograph captures the elation and determination of a champion, as well as the significance of her place in tennis history.
