Dahomey Harem Twelfth Umbrella Wives

EDITORS COMMENTS
Agoliagbo, Twelfth King of Dahomey: A Regal Portrait with His Wives Agoliagbo, born in the late 18th century, reigned as the Twelfth King of Dahomey, a powerful West African kingdom located in present-day Benin, Nigeria, from 1818 until his death in 1858. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a rare glimpse into the life of this African monarch and his harem. Agoliagbo is depicted in the image, seated on a grand throne, surrounded by his wives. The king wears an impressive ensemble of royal regalia, including a flowing white robe, a golden crown, and a large umbrella to shield him from the sun. His wives, adorned in vibrant fabrics and intricate headdresses, sit attentively at his feet, their expressions a mix of reverence and pride. Dahomey was renowned for its military might, and Agoliagbo continued the tradition of maintaining a powerful army. However, he is also remembered for his patronage of the arts and his promotion of trade. This photograph, a testament to his regal status, underscores the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of the Dahomey Kingdom. Agoliagbo's reign was marked by a period of relative peace and prosperity, but it was also a time of significant change. European powers, seeking to expand their influence in Africa, began to encroach upon the kingdom. Agoliagbo's successor, King Ghezo, would eventually sign a treaty with the British, leading to the end of the Dahomey Kingdom as an independent state. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the life of a king and his harem, and the complex history of the Dahomey Kingdom.
