EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting "Wedding Feast of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Louis of Thuringia in the Wartburg". Painted by the Master of the St Elizabeth Panels around 1490-1495, this piece is part of an altarpiece created for the Great Church in Dordrecht. Intricately detailed, the image showcases a momentous occasion in history. On the right side, we witness Duke Lodewijk van Thuringen and Hessen engaging with each other amidst a picturesque garden setting. Meanwhile, on the left side, we are transported to the grand wedding supper at Wartburg Castle. The bride's father, King Andreas, and groom's mother also grace this joyous celebration. The atmosphere is filled with merriment as three musicians serenade guests with their flutes and trumpet during this lavish banquet. In the backdrop lies a breathtaking landscape adorned with castles and city buildings. Notably present within this artwork are representations from Saint Elisabeth's life itself - her devotion to faith and acts of charity towards beggars, lepers, and those less fortunate. Additionally depicted is an event known as "the Saint Elisabeth flood" that occurred on November 18-19th in 1421. This extraordinary panel measures approximately 127.7 cm in height by 109.5 cm width; its oil paint medium brings every intricate detail to life vividly.
