EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print titled "De vlugt van t pausdom uit Engelant" by Romeyn de Hooghe captures a fascinating moment in history. Created in 1689, the artwork depicts the flight of Catholicism from England during the reign of Louis XIV. The detailed etching with letterpress showcases various symbolic elements and characters. In the foreground, we see Louis XIV riding a bear with a peg leg, symbolizing his power and resilience. He prepares to strike a lion while an eagle attacks a cock on his head, representing conflicts between nations and religious factions. Father Petre follows closely behind, riding a large dog harnessed to a wagon carrying James II, the queen, and their infant son known as the Pretender. Amidst this chaotic scene, Father Petre is harassed by a black imp with bellows while Pantagion brings up the rear on a wolf with drawn sword and bomb shooting hat. A long line of priests and monks can be seen fleeing London in the middle distance. Intriguingly, Pope Innocent XI wheels in at the upper right corner accompanied by a bishop. This engraving offers us insight into historical events through its illustrative technique and artistic style reminiscent of Victorian times. With its engraved image full of intricate details and nostalgic charm, this print from Liszt Collection provides viewers with an opportunity to explore history through art's lens without mentioning commercial use or affiliation with any specific company.
