The Virgin with a Starry Crown, 1508. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
The Virgin with a Starry Crown, 1508. Durer made four engravings of the Virgin and Child standing on a crescent moon. These devotional images link the Madonna with the pregnant Woman of the Apocalypse from the 12th book of Revelation. The verse says that " a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars... " appeared in heaven, delivering a son to conquer Satan-a prefiguration of Christ. In direct contrast with the crowned Virgin above, whose double aureole shines extravagantly around her figure, Durer conceived the Madonna (1958.116) with simplicity and humility. In each he presents the dual roles of the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven and as the humble mother of Jesus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Albrecht Dürer's masterpiece, "The Virgin with a Starry Crown" created in 1508. Dürer, a renowned German artist of the Renaissance period, crafted four engravings depicting the Virgin and Child standing on a crescent moon. These devotional images establish a connection between the Madonna and the pregnant Woman of the Apocalypse mentioned in Revelation's 12th book. In this particular artwork, we witness an exquisite contrast between two representations of the Virgin Mary. The crowned Virgin above radiates magnificence as her double aureole brilliantly illuminates her figure. On the other hand, Dürer conceived another portrayal of Mary with simplicity and humility (known as Madonna). This duality emphasizes both her role as Queen of Heaven and her humble nature as Jesus' mother. Dürer's engraving skillfully captures these contrasting aspects while paying homage to biblical symbolism. The verse from Revelation describes a woman clothed in sunlight, with the moon beneath her feet and twelve stars adorning her head – an image that appears in heaven while she delivers a son destined to conquer Satan; symbolizing Christ himself. This remarkable piece is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art. It serves not only as an artistic treasure but also as a testament to Dürer's profound understanding of religious iconography during his time.
