EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of six-panel folding screens titled "Summer and Winter Landscapes" created by the talented Japanese artist Kano Naonobu during the 1600s. The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, with a serene summer landscape depicted on the right and a stark winter scene on the left. Upon closer inspection, one can notice signs of damage to these ancient artworks. However, through meticulous conservation efforts, new sections of paper were seamlessly integrated into the original paintings while preserving their authentic essence. This restoration aimed to ensure that these remarkable pieces could continue to be admired for generations to come. Kano Naonobu was born in Kyoto and was the younger brother of renowned painter Kano Tan yu. He moved to Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1630 at the request of the Tokugawa government, where he collaborated with his brother and teacher. This exquisite artwork from Japan's Edo period showcases Naonobu's mastery in ink painting on gold and silver decorated paper.
