The SS George Washington, c1910. Creator: Unknown

The SS George Washington, c1910. German passenger ship launched in 1908, named after the first US president George Washington (1732-1799), and operated by the North German Lloyd (Norddeutscher Lloyd) shipping line. On 14 April 1912, the George Washington passed a large iceberg off Newfoundland and radioed a warning to all ships in the area, including White Star Line liner Titanic, which sank near the same location on the following day. Washington was seized by the US Government during World War I, and served as a troopship. She resumed transatlantic passenger service in the 1920s, and was again used to transport troos during World War II. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
The SS George Washington, c1910. A remarkable print capturing the grandeur of this German passenger ship launched in 1908. Named after the first US president, George Washington, this vessel was operated by the prestigious North German Lloyd shipping line. In a fateful encounter on 14 April 1912, the George Washington passed a massive iceberg off Newfoundland and promptly radioed a warning to all ships in the area, including the ill-fated Titanic which tragically sank near that very location just one day later. During World War I, the US Government seized control of the George Washington and repurposed her as a troopship. However, she eventually resumed her transatlantic passenger service in the 1920s before once again being called upon for military duties during World War II. This postcard from early 20th century America showcases not only an iconic ocean liner but also pays homage to General Washington himself with flags proudly flying high. The image portrays a sense of strength and majesty as it captures men aboard this magnificent steamship against a backdrop of vast open seas. Preserved by The Print Collector and attributed to an unknown creator, this historical artifact serves as a testament to both technological advancements in water transport and significant moments in maritime history.
