EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the essence of Sir John Alexander Macdonald, the esteemed 1st Prime Minister of Canada. Created by Cassell, Petter & Galpin in the late 19th century, this print showcases Macdonald's dignified presence and influential role in shaping Canadian history. Born in Glasgow in 1815, Macdonald embarked on a transformative journey when he emigrated to Canada with his family at a young age. A lawyer by profession, he swiftly transitioned into politics and was elected to the legislature of Canada in 1844. His dedication and astute leadership led him to be knighted in 1867 and subsequently become the first Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada. Despite facing challenges such as the Pacific scandal in 1873, where accusations were made against him regarding bribery linked to railway construction contracts, Macdonald persevered. He reclaimed power in 1878 and continued serving as Prime Minister until his passing. This portrait not only portrays Macdonald's distinguished appearance but also symbolizes his unwavering commitment to public service. As a prominent figure within Canadian politics during the Victorian era, he played an instrumental role in establishing conservative values that shaped the country's governance for years to come. Displayed prominently within The Modern Portrait Gallery by Cassell, Petter & Galpin - renowned publishers from London, Paris, and New York - this lithograph serves as a testament to Sir John Alexander Macdonald's enduring legacy as one of Canada's most influential statesmen.
