Single Leaf from a Biblia Pauperum : Christ Crowned with Thorns, c. 1410
Single Leaf from a " Biblia Pauperum" : Christ Crowned with Thorns, c. 1410. Also known as the " Poor Mens Bible, " the Biblia Pauperum was a simple picture book used to explain biblical prophecies and symbolism. These volumes served as an aid for preachers to demonstrate the unity of the Bible. The iconography of these popular books juxtaposed two Old Testament scenes with one from the life of Christ. In this example, the image of Christ carrying the cross is inserted between Abraham and Isaac on the way to sacrifice (on the left) and Elijah with the idow of Zarephath (right). The Biblia Pauperum appeared first in manuscript form in the 1200s, became a popular picture book with miniatures in the 1300s, and after 1450 it emerged as a print book with woodcuts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Single Leaf from a Biblia Pauperum, specifically depicting the powerful scene of Christ Crowned with Thorns. Created around 1410 in Bavaria, Germany, this leaf is part of the renowned "Poor Men's Bible" which aimed to elucidate biblical prophecies and symbolism through simple picture books. The Biblia Pauperum served as an invaluable tool for preachers seeking to demonstrate the unity of the Bible. Its iconography ingeniously juxtaposed two scenes from the Old Testament with one from Christ's life. In this particular leaf, we witness Christ carrying the cross placed between Abraham and Isaac on their way to sacrifice and Elijah with the widow of Zarephath. Originally produced as manuscripts in the 1200s, these volumes gained immense popularity in the 1300s when they transformed into picture books adorned with exquisite miniatures. By 1450, they evolved further into printed books featuring intricate woodcuts. Displayed against a backdrop of ink and tempera on vellum, this extraordinary artifact now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art under unknown ownership. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured its essence in this stunning print that transports us back to medieval times—a testament to both artistic mastery and historical significance.
